D&AD Student Awards: Body Shop

So it's D&AD Student Awards time. I chose the Body Shop packaging brief. Criteria was to create something that responded to target audience (20 ish - 6 0ish women) and to reflected the brand's values which are fair trade, human rights, protect the planet (so had to be sustainable and cost effective) against animal testing.

After choosing this brief I kind of regretted it as I felt I couldn't do much due to the sustainable design factor, and I wanted to do something cool and crazy, but I chose the brief so that's my fault so I just had to man up and get on with it!

I'm fairly pleased with my outcome and I got it all sent off yesterday!

RSA - Student Awards

So for this project we got a choice of breifs. I chose one called Giving and Getting, through which we had to invent a way that inspires people to give to charity, or makes it easier for them to do so.

My idea was called "Go & Give", a scheme that would allow people to donate money to charity off of their Oyster card. The idea being that a selected charity displays it's campaign to commuters as they're travelling down the escalator, then at the bottom of the escalator there is a "Donation Pod" that if commuters want to donate, they simply swipe there oyster against, which will add an additional fee to their journey, and that additional fee goes to charity! Simples, kind of.

Here are the 4 presentaion boards:

Introductory Board: Visual of where campaigns will go, displaying informative posters about "Give & Go" to introduce the idea to commuters and how it works.

Board 2: Shows the posters closer up, last poster is one that would be used elsewhere to advertist the idea.

Board 3: Shows the donation pod and screen that shows a thank you message when some one donates.

Board 4: Thank you letter and limited edition Oyster Card that gets sent to those who continously donate.

I really enjoyed this project as it was very different to anything else I'd ever done before. My tutors really liked it and decided to enter it into the RSA - Student Design Awards.

First project of the 3rd year was to select an event and create a poster for it. I chose Ping! London, an event that encouraged people to pick up table tennis bats and play a game on tables that had been set up all over London, for free. In the end I made 3 possible solutions but only handed in 2.

An Owl! Just something that arrived out of boredom, although I quite like it. Thinking of making it into a series of posters based on nocturnal animals. All will be screen printed when I get back to Uni. Lovely.

Information Graphics project. We had to pick a sport and create a promotional booklet/brochure focusing on one sport focusing on interesting ways to convey information, in order to promote the London 2012 Olympic Games. I chose basketball because I had recently returned from New York where I saw the New York Knicks.

Magazine project for one of our workshops. We had to create a front and back cover, contents, and 3 spreads. The demographic is for young, creative minded people.

I decided to focus on the title of the magazine, and based a lot of the imagery around that. The sections and titles represent the cycle of the fire and match the imagery used.

Typographic Horizons

This was our last project before the Christmas break, and probably our hardest this year. We had to create an A5 ( or smaller) mail out informing people of an event called "Typographic Horizons", a series of lectures given by famous typographers. I was pleased with my outcome, but I had to change it slightly due to time restraints.

Woop thurrrrr it is. I missed out the second page for Eric Spiekerman. Poor Eric Spiekerman. Instead of plain white paper, I wanted to have the pages going from orange, to red, to darker red, to purple then blue, and the red sun on the bottom of each page would have been a cut through instead. However coloured paper would have meant the text would have had to have been white, and to get white text I would have had to screen print it, but I ran out of time and had to stick with the white paper. After I had conquered this project, and humped it into submission, my desk was left in a pretty bad state. I only tidied it up yesterday as well.

I seem to be doing a lot of illustration recently. I suppose it's a better time filler than facebook, youtube, or porn...or a weird combination of all 3. Definitely more productive. The latest is a drawing of Optimus Prime from Transformers.

WORK N SHIT

So I gave in and created a blog and now I'm officially cool. Only coolest of kids have blogs, and I will celebrate this transformation with a banana. Nice.

The main reason I created this was to post my work so people can see what I've been up to, comment, give me feedback, etc. and hopefully this will help me progress. I'm also hoping it will help me be more productive, and encourage me to take on more self directed briefs, instead of just doing work set by my tutors at Uni.

To get things going I'm gonna post some stuff from my first year of Uni as none of my work for this year is complete yet.

This is a poster created for our Digital Illustration workshop last year. We had to choose any object from our room, bring it in, trace it in Illustrator then stylise it how we wanted, then find an event that related to the object, and create a poster for it. This was my outcome. At the time I remember being quite pleased with the final piece but after looking at it again for the first time in about 6 months, there are things there that I'm not too sure about now. Oh well. We always had to produce 2 postcards to go with the poster:

Book Jackets: Another brief was to create a book jacket for a company called Expresso Books that print and bind books on demand. There was a really long list which we had to choose a couple from, all of which had really obscure titles such as: Thermodynamics of a pizza, Natural Bust Enlargement with Total Mind Power, Tea Bag Folding, and many many more. The scary thing is they were all real books. Here is my effort:

There are 2 other book jackets somewhere but I can't find them. SHEET. Magazine Design: Another project we were set was to come up with a front cover, and a double page spread for the magazine Wired. There were a couple articles to choose from.

This project was just to get us used to using Illustrator and InDesign and taught us a few little tricks along the way.

Fliers: A friend of mine runs a music promotions company in Southampton and asks me to do a few fliers for him here and there.
